5 Top Kitchen Storage Tips

5 Top Kitchen Storage Tips

We don’t always get spacious open kitchen, but we all need to cook nice homemade meals and food no matter you live in big mansion or tiny apartment. We all need the basic whiteware, cooking utensils, dining sets, herbs, spices and all sorts of kitchen accessories.

It’s okay to keep them all, but it is not okay if you don’t keep them tidy. You sure need to believe, if you already find yourself hard to turn around in piles of cluttered kitchen, then you just won’t be able to make nice steamy food of your dream home.

First thing you need to know about kitchen storage is that it does NOT mean to hide away everything and make it look all cleared.  It is about the great balance of appearance and convenience, how things are supposed to have their own places and in certain order for them to look nice.

So lets go through few tips on kitchen storage:

1.  Get them on the wall

Use your kitchen wall wisely, hang up the utensils, add on floating shelf or wall mounted storage shelves. Easiest way would be installing some metal rods or racks then use as many as S-shaped hooks to hang anything that can be hooked.

For the rest that doesn’t come with handle, shelves with flat top would be best.  Store your tea sets, coffee beans, spices and maybe something green as decorations. This extra open and flat area boosts convenience where you could see and get things you need in seconds. Magnetic knife holder is another great tool to have, tiny in size that would only take up small wall space but it allows you to stick metal tools on the wall effortless.

2. Categorised and designated areas

Just like you won’t find a book in your fridge, your kitchen items should have their own designated place to be too. Categorise them upon their purpose? Baking accessories should be grouped together, utensils should be hanged side by side, cutleries should be stored in one single drawer, seasoning all grouped up on a spice rack stand, snacks in the cupboard …etc.

Stack things up whenever possible, plates, saucers, bowls pots and so on. Remember you want to store things vertically instead of horizontally spread out.  By grouping stuff together it also helps you to find things you need much faster, just like supermarket shelves categories.

If storing spices and food ingredients in open area, using same or similar style of containers would be a great idea – it is one of the tips I found most useful for me.  It would help on general appearance by retaining consistency.  Oh! Remember to think about if the food you are storing away is light-sensitive though, as in this case you would want something non-transparent and air tight.

3. storage containers

Internal storage is just as important this includes your cupboard spaces, drawers and even fridge. You don’t want to open the cupboard and risk of something falls off – gets worse if you have kids at home. Make good use of assorted food containers! They are amazing and sometimes magical.

The store-away items should be categorised just as above. Food ingredients best stored away with container sets and they are most likely stackable now.

I’d like to apply this particularly in the fridge as the smell of the fridge could be one of the most horrible thing ever. Don’t know about you, but I find this image is a great example and soooothing! You want to separate meat and eggs and avoid direct contact with other food to prevent food contamination, mostly I just hate the idea of how germs (which have most numbers on meat and fish) could be easily passed onto something else in the fridge. Also think again about smell, exposed fish meat? Not a great idea even wrapped up in cling wrap.  Personally, I would choose glass containers over plastic, since you don’t need to carry them around, it is okay for them to carry a bit of weight. Glass containers are much more easy to clean, leaves no stain, dishwasher safe (for sanitise purpose) and less likely to smell, it also lasts forever!

4. Use corner spaces

You might have blind spots you never use in your kitchen, it might be the tiny corners or simply too small to have any shelving.  These spaces can be useful when you find the right way. Maybe nail up some clothes hooks to hang your apron and tea towels? Maybe mount up a cling wrap paper towel dispenser to add on much more convenience?

5. Kitchen Storage Shelves

Use of kitchen storage shelves would be the most handy and effective way to get more storage spaces sorted.  You would once again see the application of vertical storage as the fundamental idea. For the kitchen that doesn’t come with built-in microwave space, this is a great solution too. These shelves are also super awesome when you have extra kitchen appliance – if you are a baker at home, where would you put your mixer, beater, mixing bowls and all sorts of cool stuff? Try to leave most heavy things and stuff that you use most often on lower shelves, considering convenience and safety.

Bed Frame Buying Guide – How To Choose A Bed Frame?

Bed Frame Buying Guide – How To Choose A Bed Frame?

Depending on where you live, you might have dozens of choices on bed frames – or none at all if you live in small towns. But hey, this is where TreasureBox NZ comes in – you could shop quality bed frame with us just in a few clicks.

No matter when you go to your local furniture stores or to shop bed frames online in NZ, you could still struggle right and most of the time, the most certain thing in your mind is probably just size. Apart from that, you might be struggling with bed frame features, upholstery materials and quality.

What we like to always ask you to think about before buying a bed frame just for you:

1. Size:

The most certain point right? If you bought wrong size bed frame you might have also bought wrong size mattress and….ouch! That’s going to be a pain. So do take a look at where you want your bed placed and how much space do you have? Do you want to place in bedside tables as well? If so, how many? one or two? Are there going to be free-standing wardrobe or any other bedroom furniture that would take up floor space? By counting all that in, how much space do you have left for just the bed while you could still leave cozy space around the bed? These basic questions should give you an idea on what bed size are you getting.

2. Features:

Are you a fan of simplicity? Or you need extra storage under bed? If you do, do you want it to be in drawers? Or to lift the whole bed up? Do you require your bed to be combined with headboard? Or you are keen to have a fancy bed combined with bedroom furniture? Lift up bed also requires bigger spaces too as they are generally longer and wider than standard mattress size.

3. Under-bed Clearance:

Most of the time, the higher the bed would give you more under-bed clearance. The overall height of the bed would be very personal as it would be different for everyone. Under-bed clearance allows more efficient cleaning or allowing robot vacuum cleaner to get in. Otherwise you might prefer to have no under-bed clearance at all.

Wooden bed frame is constructed by connecting headboard piece and foot board piece together with under-bed clearance. Most essential point to look for is whether or not it comes with centre support poles for enhanced sturdiness.

4. Material:

It is about the look right? As most likely, your bed would be the very centre piece of furniture in your bedroom so yes, look is very important and material could greatly influence that. Other than the look, I would also suggest for you to think about how easy maintenance this would bring you. For example, velvety material would give you that warming and soft touch BUT it could be a nightmare when it comes to cleaning – especially if you’re an OCD and want it completely dust-free.

Wooden bed frames tend to be my most favoured because of the sleek and straight edges, they are relatively easy to clean as well. Mostly need to worry about dust build up but because it is not rough and porous, there is no place for dust to hide, simply wipe it off or dust it off would do. Not much maintenance I could think of.

PU leather beds would be ranked right after. With PU leather upholstery, it is softer than wooden bed with warmer touch. They are quite easy to clean but dust could be seen easily even you just wiped it off yesterday, especially if you get a darker coloured bed.

5. Budget:

This is mostly affected by material chose, design and craftsmanship. Hand made bed for example would expected to be at higher price end. Same if you’re looking for bed made with special wood such as Kauri.  A whole bed without having to put together would be definitely more expensive than DIY beds with assembly required.

If you are looking for wooden beds, top choice would always be beds made with solid wood. Wooden boards like particle boards or MDF are not recommended when it comes to bed though.

If you are more fussy about noise then avoid choosing beds that need excessive assembly – like headboards are joint by 2 separate pieces and also avoid choosing beds with features – like lift beds.

10 Coolest Bunk Beds Ever Kids Bedroom Ideas

10 Coolest Bunk Beds Ever Kids Bedroom Ideas

From the post about bedroom storage, we talked about the ideas of having bunk beds combining bedroom furniture and from doing all the searching, I’ve found quite a few interesting bunk bed designs that I thought it would be fun to share.

Most of them are kids room design ideas while using bunk bed as the main character of the room and wow! Kids these days do get a lot of cool stuff that we could not have imagined when we were little!

This bunk bed features a beach watch station and it is my personal favourite as it includes my most favoured elements navy stripes, anchor, rustic white and WHALES!!

I believe there are so many boys obsessed about planes and this bunk bed with slide would be one of the best place to have a daydream. Climb up and slide down, feel the wind and imagine being on an aeroplane.

Oooooooo this is a rather ‘crazy’ one – yeah…crazy for adults to look at shockingly and crazy for kids to wanting to sleep in one. I can’t even figure how many kids could fit in this room but by looking at how these beds are all connected together, slide and ball pit, I could see a sleep-over heaven!

The loft style is stunning and I reckon the highlight in this bedroom is the baby cot at the bottom of the bunks. Would totally work for families with 2 kids one being still a baby. Only downside is the bars around top bunks doesn’t look so safe to me though.

This bedroom is definitely going on the top 10 list and I am sure you would agree too. Pendant light on bedroom ceiling, pink single couch, the castle, princessy stairs, bows and ribbons…..everything you need to make a little girl cry out of joy!

Solution for getting two kids insist on having their own ‘territory’ to share one bedroom – awesome tree house bunk beds, one each!! They all get to decide what to put underneath bunk beds. How wonderful!

This bedroom would be one of my favourite too and would be a dreamy bedroom for a lot of kiwi kids I believe. A great theme to bring out our amazing New Zealand beaches for kids have passions towards surfing. Would be awesome to accompany with a star light projector at night with the open bed, urrhh I am jealous of this bed owner already!

Another awesome top sleep-over heaven! Kids always love tree houses because how private it is and they seemed to like having a daydream at higher altitudes haha. Slide looks fun again but just not the stairs though…..I am scared to climb up a rope ladder being an adult so definitely not safe for kids.

I like this bedroom idea because of how much it brought out a wooden tree theme, it makes me feel like I am sleeping inside a tree trunk in a forest. So mysterious, and I am definitely bringing over my best buddy this weekend to share this secret spot – as a child of course  XD.

I saw this one and immediately thought about ALL BOYS hahaha! I put this one at last because from what I could see, super heroes are eternal favoured and it is the most realistic amongst all. All you need is to use your creativity on decorating the bed. Even it may not be as many features as shown on the ones above, but kids would still looooove it! I would!! Toy storage or a private (but open) play room underneath the bunk bed is such a brilliant idea.

5 Smart Bedroom Storage Ideas

5 Smart Bedroom Storage Ideas

For those of you who owns small rental house like apartments or townhouses or just a small single room, you might face common problem of not having a walk-in wardrobe and proper storage room.

If you are just renting a single room, this would’ve been a much greater issue for you.

Although I would love to tell you to go with minimalism but I know it is really hard for most of people including myself.

So how do you make the most out of a limited spaced bedroom? How do we choose bedroom furniture wisely to fit into smaller spaces?

storage bed with drawers

It would be great if it is in-built like this. Although this is not very common renovation style in New Zealand but it always makes me wonder why not go elevated when you have small bedroom? It would give you much more spaces.

Very contemporary and practical option with under bed storage drawers. Choosing a wooden bed would usually lead matching bedroom furniture much easier to hunt.

bunk bed with desk and storage

Although the idea of bunk bed with desk and storage is most commonly being applied to kids room, but I do find them more than fascinating! Another great idea make you go WHY NOT?!

Wisely use vertical spaces instead of horizontal spaces.

Not to mention you get cool adult ones like this. Workstation at the bottom and sleep on upper bed.

tallboys lowboys dressers

Tallboys, lowboys, it doesn’t matter – depending on floor area you have, just choose ones you like the most. Just one thing though, try your best to match them in the same style or colour to main the consistency.

Bedside Storage area

Bedside area would be the most interesting topic, and you could see quite a few different creative renovation ideas that works around bedside area.

I am guessing this is because we spend so much time in our lives in bed haha.

This one combines floating shelves and bedside table and it is absolutely stunning.

multifunctional headboards

This combines a bookshelf and headboard as a new bedroom furniture- awesome aye! Especially when you have it on the side so you don’t draw too much attention.

If you are the lucky ones who gets to decide on bedroom renovations , then worth to think about the idea of extending your headboard zone horizontally so you would have more shelving spaces for storage or decorations.

By stretching headboard zones vertically, you get much more possibilities.

This would be one of my favourite ideas – a double-sided headboard!

Yeah! Why didn’t we think about to make the room useful behind a headboard? Study desk with bookshelf if a brilliant design.  Not only this could sort your storage needs but also to offer working zones.

5 Great Living Room Furniture for Rental Houses

If you happen to live in populated Auckland city like our TreasureBox team for example, you may experience the living spaces could get smaller and smaller.

Students who rent your own living space like city apartments might experience frequent house moving, this is when you want to consider furniture that is affordable, compact, simple and modern to fit to all living spaces.

In this post, I am going to recommend a few living room furniture that I adore the most and found them most useful and definitely student-friendly!

3-Seater Lounge Suite Sofa with Chaise

If you really have to consider a couch then this would be one of the best, and as always, black, white and grey are the colours that fits into all living spaces. L-shape allows not just you but your friends or flat mates to spend times together.

3-Seater Fold Out Sofabed with Cup Holders

Otherwise, a couch that converts to sofa bed would be best recommended. This 3 seater couch is one of the most versatile model, comes with cup holders just perfect for renting couples. Enjoy a great movie night easy and transform it into a fold down bed if you have sleep overs.

Rattan Room Divider Screen

You might have seen some property with rather odd layouts, sometimes it could be a super narrow spaces or random shaped corners. This is when a foldable room divider is going to show you its charm. It provides instant separation of one space and helps you to ‘hide’ those odd corner or your storage boxes that you got no where to put away but stored in the living room.

LAGUNA 1.2M Entertainment Media TV Unit

Two main reasons that Laguna is my favourite entertainment unit amongst all – for the scandi design & colour and also for its size. I am a big fan of scandi furnishing and oak + white is the top combination that never goes wrong. 1.2m is just right for all apartments even better for people who is only renting a single room, 1.2m should always fit.You might want to consider matching coffee table and shoe storage cabinet too!

1 Drawer Wooden Coffee Table
TAHOE Shoe Rack Storage Shelf Cabinet Organiser

MALIGNE Storage Shelf Cabinet on Wheels

Something that is multipurpose or all-purpose is soooo handy! Have one in your own room, or extra dining storage, maybe around the entrance to be your show rack, under your study desk for the storage of your study material, in the living room as your side table…I could go on and on. Best of all, the feature of how it is on wheels allows mobility in the house, move it to wherever you need it. So this would be the furniture that I would regret on not sharing.

Of course they are so many more to choose from so visit our TreasureBox homepage and click on Furniture category and be ready to shop!
